Derek Wakeling - Mark Trundle Member of the Year 2011/12

This year, the committee has awarded the Member of the Year Award to Derek Wakeling.  Derek has been steward and groundsman of the club since the early 1980s.  Derek is the face of Pit Farm and is responsible for making all of our members really welcome at club sessions.  The beautiful grounds are a testimony to his hard work and we can't begin to imagine what the club would have been like without such a tremendous personality.  Congratulations Derek - we owe you decades of thanks and it is a pleasure to be able to honour him in this way.

Social Events - Scrabble, Table Tennis & Bridge on Thursdays

Scrabble comes to Pit Farm as a regular feature on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  Table Tennis is a regular feature on the second Thursday of the month.  Both activities run alongside the regular Club tennis session, i.e. from 6.00 pm - 8.30 p.m. so they can be played by non-tennis players and tennis players alike.

You can play tennis outside or Scrabble inside, or both - even if it rains!  Shirley Alexander will provide the Scrabble boards, dictionary, scorers etc.  Jack Harrington will be organising the tabke tennis.  If you haven't played before come and have a go.
Bridge is held on the first Thursday of the month excepting the summer months run by Joy Watson.
Check the notice boards for details.

Bridge is the first Thursday of the month (with a break in the summer months); Table Tennis the second Thursday; scrabble the third Thursday.

I'm pleased to inform you that Pit Farm has formed an affiliation with Guildford Golf Club.  This Affiliation gives Pit Farm members a number of benefits as follows:

GOLF SOCIETY DISCOUNT:  Should Pit Farm arrange a golf society day at Guildford Golf Club (GGC), the rate will include a 10% discount on the published prices;

SUNDAY LUNCH, a coffee or a drink from the bar -  Pit Farm members are free to come up and use the golf club/restaurant.  Access to the bar is alongside the Pro Shop and the Professionals can give you an access code to get into the bar.  The bar staff and professionals have ben informed that Pit Farm members are part of the Affiliate Scheme and will be happy to serve you.  There is at present a dress code where no jeans and T-shirts are allowed. However for private parties and particular evenings - they do drop the dress code and jeans are permitted.

PREFERENTIAL GREEN FEE RATES:  Where a Pit Farm member wants to play golf at Guildford, the Affiliate's guest fee at that time will be applicable (£21 is the winter 2010 price, with £25 being the summer rate from 1st April 2010). It is NOT a course for beginners and the golf club has stipulated that men should be able to play to a level equivalent to a 28 handicap; ladies to 36. When paying your green fee, please present your Pit Farm membership card;

To book a tee time (up to 7 days in advance) call 01483 566765.  Tell the pro shop you are an Affiliate member to get your discounted rate.

There are some quiz nights coming up at Guildford Golf Club.  These are held on the last Friday of each month (where food is also served).  If you would like to come along, please book a table by phoning 01483 531842  or 01483 563941.  Food tends to be charged at between £8-10 on the night.   Jeans are allowed on quiz nights and there is no limit on the number in a team.

NO JOINING FEE:  For as long as Pit Farm has an Affiliate Relationship with the Golf Club, then any Pit Farm member will have their joining fee to Guildford Golf Club waived.

Many of you might have gone up to the golf club during the snow when they opened up the club as an experiment to non-members.  Now all Pit Farm members can use the facilities of Guildford Golf Club on a day-to-day basis.

Change 4 Life

Some of you may have seen some of the posters in Guildford , in the press or on TV highlighting Change 4 Life.  One of the things suggested is getting the bikes out of the garage or shed and using them instead of the car.  At the club we have plenty of cycle racks, so why don't you consider ditching the car and getting on your bike to come up and play tennis.  It will help reduce parking and congestion and is a great way of getting you warmed up before play.  If you are going to cycle, please be safe and wear a cycle helmet.  I have the most unflattering cycle helmet in Surrey , so it is a sure thing that you will look less ridiculous than me!
